Examination of Teacher Candidates’ Opinions on the Public Personnel Selection Examination (KPSS) and the Adequacy of their Professional Education
Abstract
The purpose of this research study is to examine the appointment process of teachers based on the Public Personnel Selection Examination (KPSS) focusing on the opinions of prospective teachers about the relationship between KPSS and the curriculum at faculties of education. 200 prospective teachers from Izmir participated in the study. A mixed method was used in the study, and a questionnaire consisting of 4 sections and 28 items was used. The results of the study showed that prospective teachers associate the professional education they receive in their programs with low levels of sufficiency. The prospective teachers reported their competence levels in preparation for KPSS as ‘mid’. Participants also reported that there is no parallelism between the knowledge and skills introduced in their teacher education program and the ones focused on in the KPSS exam. The prospective teachers further stated that the KPSS was not a reliable and objective exam. They were also disappointed by the news about cheating in past examinations and challenges to objectivity fairness in appointment processes. Furthermore, the prospective teachers also point out that KPSS is not a valid test which can effectively select candidates for the teaching profession.
